Negative marking explained: how scores work and when to guess
How negative marking works in OMR exams, how to calculate scores, and the maths of guessing for +4/−1, +2/−0.5, +2/−0.66 and +1/−0.25 schemes.
Negative marking deducts marks for wrong answers so that random guessing doesn't pay. It's common in competitive exams and increasingly used in school tests. Understanding the maths helps teachers set fair marking schemes and helps students decide when to attempt a question.
How a score is calculated
For each section:
Score = (correct answers × marks per correct) − (wrong answers × marks deducted per wrong)
Unanswered questions score zero. For example, with +4 / −1 marking, a student with 120 correct, 30 wrong and 30 unanswered scores 120 × 4 − 30 × 1 = 450.

The maths of guessing
The expected value of a guess is the average marks you would gain if you made the same guess many times:
Expected value = (chance of being right × marks for correct) − (chance of being wrong × marks deducted)

For example, with +4 / −1 and four options, a blind guess is right 1 time in 4: 0.25 × 4 − 0.75 × 1 = +0.25 marks on average. If you can rule out two options, you're right half the time: 0.5 × 4 − 0.5 × 1 = +1.5.
What this means in practice
- Blind guessing is roughly break-even under one-third or one-quarter penalties designed for that purpose, and only slightly positive under +4 / −1.
- Educated guessing, after eliminating even one option, has a positive expected value in all of these schemes.
- Expected value isn't a guarantee. Guessing adds risk. If you only need a safe qualifying score, you may prefer to skip uncertain questions.
- Never mark two options. Multiple marks are usually treated as wrong.
Setting negative marking in ToolAdda OMR
- In the generator, each section has Correct (+) and Wrong (−) boxes. Enter the deduction as a negative number, such as
-1or-0.25. - In the checker, the marking scheme appears in step 1 and can be changed at any time. All scores update instantly.
- Choose whether multiple marks count as wrong (with the deduction) or as blank.
Different sections can use different schemes, for example −1 for multiple-choice questions and 0 for numerical ones.
Tips for teachers
- Announce the marking scheme before the test and print it in the sheet subtitle.
- Use a penalty of 1 / (options − 1) of the positive mark to make blind guessing worth zero on average.
- Review the most frequently chosen wrong options in the CSV; they reveal common misconceptions.
