# How to fill an OMR sheet correctly

Knowing the answer is only half the job in an OMR exam. If a bubble is filled lightly, partly or twice, a machine may read it differently from what you meant. These rules apply to almost every OMR answer sheet, from classroom tests to major entrance exams. Always follow the specific instructions printed on your own sheet and given by your invigilator.

## Use the right pen

- **Black or blue ballpoint pen** is required for most modern OMR sheets. It produces dark, permanent marks.
- **Don't use gel pens** unless allowed; they can smudge and bleed.
- **Pencil** is only acceptable when the instructions say so. If it is allowed, use a dark (HB or softer) pencil and press firmly.
- Carry a spare pen. Running out of ink halfway through is more common than you'd think.

## Darken bubbles completely

A correctly filled bubble is **completely dark inside**, without going far outside the circle.

| Mark | Is it valid? |
| --- | --- |
| Fully darkened circle | Yes: this is the only correct way. |
| Tick (✓) or cross (✗) | No: may be read as blank or unclear. |
| Dot or small line | No: usually read as blank. |
| Half-filled circle | Risky: may not be detected. |
| Two circles filled for one question | No: treated as an invalid or wrong answer. |

Fill each bubble with small circular strokes from the edge inward. It takes about two seconds per bubble once you practise.

## Fill in your details first

1. **Write your roll number** in the boxes at the top of the roll number grid, one digit per box.
2. **Darken the matching bubble** under each digit. If your roll number is 204518, darken 2 in the first column, 0 in the second and so on.
3. **Mark your test booklet set** (A, B, C or D) exactly as printed on your question paper. A wrong set means your answers are checked against the wrong key.
4. Write your name, class and other details in the boxes, and sign where asked.

**Double-check the roll number.** An error here can make it impossible to match your sheet to you, however well you answered.

## Common mistakes that cost marks

- **Shifting rows:** answering question 12 in row 13 shifts every later answer. Check the question number every five questions.
- **Changing answers:** most OMR sheets don't allow erasing or overwriting. Decide before you darken.
- **Stray marks:** don't write, doodle or do rough work on the sheet.
- **Folding or crumpling** the sheet, or damaging the black squares in the corners that machines use for alignment.
- **Leaving details blank** such as the roll number or set code.

## A strategy that saves time

1. Mark your answers on the question paper first (if allowed).
2. Transfer answers to the OMR sheet in batches, for example every 10 to 15 questions, rather than one at a time.
3. Keep the last 10 to 15 minutes to transfer any remaining answers and check your roll number and set code.

## Frequently asked questions

### What happens if I fill two bubbles?

Most exams treat multiple answers as wrong or invalid, and some apply negative marks. Fill only one bubble per question.

### Can I use whitener to correct a mistake?

Almost never. Whitener and erasers are usually prohibited because they damage the sheet and confuse the reader.

### Does the colour of the ink matter?

Use the colour the instructions ask for, usually black or blue. Other colours, especially red, may not be detected.
